Virgin Galactic Wings
Exquisite Digital Sculpting for 3D Print Prototyping and Production
This is Astronaut Chris Hadfield presenting these intricately detailed flight wings to be pinned upon Sir Richard Branson and the other 3 Virgin Galactic passengers after returning from their maiden voyage aboard VSS Unity.
The wings are a design collaboration between Mark Bonner, Sophie Both Turner, Dave Wood and Jack Mercer. Developed in 3D by Jonathan Lax and prepared as an exquisite 3D print in 18K Gold via Shapeways.
As 3D sculptor on this project my task was to augment the original scans to fit an iconic shape and accentuate the detail to bring out the delicate structures in solid metal prints.
Printing in plastic can easily give us thin wing structures but when you’re printing in precious metals like Gold, Silver, Platinum and Brass a lot of iterative work is needed to reveal the detail in an overall thicker structure.
This is a GBH London and /B.randed Production
